Lulu Lobster Boat Ride

Eco-Tourism at its Best!

Hi!

Although we had less than great weather this year for my sixth annual 9/11 Fire Department Fundraiser, I was able to operate three of my four scheduled departures. Thanks to the generosity of my passengers, a local business, caring visitors and local citizens, I was able to raise $1,400 this year for our local volunteer fire departments.

Since 2001, my 9/11 Fundraiser has collected over $5,600. My heartfelt thanks to my passengers and the local media for helping me help our local first responders. These volunteers sacrifice their safety, time and comfort to protect us. Specialized emergency and reliable communication equipment along with training cost money. I consider all donations as an investment in the future safety of our families and businesses.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED!

Thanks!
The Captain's wife, Coreen

Hi Again!

Lulu Lobster Boat Ride featured on CBS Early Show Great American Vacation
Series - August 30, 2007

I had a blast with Weatherman Dave Price and the CBS Early Show crew on
Thursday! They were really a pleasure to work with. Dave is a genuinely
nice guy, funny and not fake at all. What you see on camera is just how
he is off camera. A real class act. Here's a link to a video clip
showing some of what aired last week in case you missed it.

*Please be patient when clicking on this link.  There is a 30 second commercial prior to the Bar Harbor video.

Hi again, Everyone!

We were involved in the rescue of a one week old harbor seal that was
abandoned by its mother on the shore in front of the Balance Rock Inn last
month.  I have a great photo from Allied Whale/COA and the University of
New England's Maine Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center in Biddeford.
I've attached the photo below.

She is named #40 (aka the Balance Rock Pup).
John has the photo on board and is telling its story on most cruises since
mid-June.  Join us and hear all about it!

Thanks!
The Captain's wife, Coreen

Our family would recommend spending time with Captain John aboard the Lulu.  John opened up to us the world of lobstermen, lobsters, and the responsible lobster industry.  We truly enjoyed being out on the water seeing the islands, seals, and even a diving bald eagle.
The kids loved it.  My wife appreciated the care that was taken to keep the boat from rocking in the waves.  The ride was a highlight of our trip.
Afterwards, our car batter died.  Captain John came to our rescue.  He went out of his way to jump start our car and send us on our way.

Well, where to start?

This trip impressed me most of the ones we went on in Bar Harbor.  I think its the best value with what you get.

We first venture out of the harbor and went to a nearby lighthouse on a rocky island where we spent a bit watching the seals laying out on the rock ledge.  The captain explained the differences between the 2 breeds that are in the area and explained some local lore.

From there we ventured on to where he  had one of his lobster pots.  He pulled it up to reveal 3-4 lobsters, 4-5 crabs, and even a couple star fish.  He showed everyone a close-up of the creatures and gave us a pretty thorough lesson on the anatomy of the lobster.   It was all very interesting.

Overall, it was a great experience, and you walk away feeling you got your money's worth.

We knew we wanted to visit Maine for our vacation, but didn't know where to stay.  We picked Bar Harbor.  I had found many  sites on going out on a boat, but the Lulu Lobster boat site, I was curious about.  We decided on going on only one boat on our trip and we were not disappointed.  Not only was the trip educational, with the smaller group size it made the experience even more exciting.  My husband and I had taken my daughter (12 years old) and my niece (10 years old) on the boat and they loved it.  My niece got to steer the boat (my daughter felt she was too old to do so) and she talked about it for most of the vacation.

We loved the tour last October. The tall tales, seaside mansions, lighthouse, wildlife and lobster tutorial were outstanding. My wife and I will definitely visit Bar Harbor again!

He also is great with the kids and adults alike. We just got back from vacation and I have been telling everyone about our wonderful experience!

Please don't miss the LuLu Lobster Boat. Captain John is a wonderful tour guide of the Lobster Trade and will educate you on every aspect of lobsters - if you think there's not much to know, just take the trip and see! 1st Mate Kevin took us up close enough to the seals to be able to see the pups without scaring them and we got great pics of the Lighthouse. They both made the trip fun and interesting. We took our 12 yr. old Grandson and it was the highlight of his Bar Harbor vacation.

Capt. John is an incredible guide to the lobstering of Bar Harbor. This trip was a steal at $25!

Capt. John is fluent in both English and French, sharing his vast knowledge and love of lobstering. My husband and I travel the world and have to list this as one of our favorite excursions. Capt. John pulls lobster pots and gives you a great lesson on the anatomy of the lobster, its life and lobstering. It is exciting to watch the pots come to the surface and see what "we" have caught. The boat also does a loop out to see harbor seals lounging on rocky ledges.

I highly recommend this trip.

The small group size and the caliber of the presentation makes this a must-do on your visit to Bar Harbor. The t-shirt shops will not hold your interest long, the land-based sight-seeing is very pleasant but not so different from lots of other parks along coastal areas, and you're going to want something "extra" and unique after (or before) your daily meal of lobster. Seeing the mechanics and logistics of hauling and re-setting the traps, together with a fact-filled commentary, and comment-filled "factuary," about lobstering, including the life, the conservation protocols, and so on, is probably the single experience unique to this vacation spot that you will simply not forget. The next time you're having lobster in some far-inland restaurant, you'll be equipped to regale your dinner mates with substantial lore, just as if you were an old shellback yourself.
